“'The Darkness That You Fear' is a hopeful piece of music”
View (DJ Naoyaman)
The new song's first airing wasn't in a club but at an Apple product launch.
Released on 23 April 2021, their first new music since No Geography two years earlier premiered that week at Apple's spring event.35 The sleeve is a work by the late British abstract painter Sir Terry Frost.3
Tom called it a hopeful piece of music. Ruffmercy, who made the video, said he heard it just as easing of the lockdown was announced, felt positive, and went back to archive rave footage from the mid-'90s, when he first found the band, layering it with hand-painted Super 8 textures and hand-drawn animation.5
Sending out a new song with footage of '90s dance floors, just as lockdown was beginning to lift. I take it as a letter of that kind.
A limited 12" came out that year for Record Store Day,3 reaching No. 10 on the UK vinyl chart.4
