The band's name comes from a song title.

Released on 12" by Junior Boy's Own in early 1994, this EP still carried the Dust Brothers name.2 One of its tracks, "Chemical Beats", had become a club staple by the time Exit Planet Dust came out the following year.4

Threatened with a lawsuit by the American production team of the same name, the two changed their name. The new one was taken from "Chemical Beats".3

Losing a name, and picking the next one from a song already in your hands. I think their temperament is already showing here: rather than look for what isn't there, use what is.

At the top of this site I wrote that a catalyst comes out of a reaction unchanged. This catalyst did change its name, just the once.
