Planet Asia & Madlib / 2011 / California

## ツアーの合間に残った、三分間。

「Masonic Vocals」は、Planet AsiaとMadlibの『Cracks in the Vinyl』に入っている。2011年12月の紹介記事は六曲の順番を記録し、この曲を三曲目、3分2秒と掲載した。いま目に入る配信ページの日付より、曲の来歴は少し古い。短いEPの中に置かれた一曲として、まずその場所を押さえておきたい。

当時のThe Word Is Bondは、Cali Agentsのヨーロッパ・ツアー中、三日間の空き時間にドイツで録音された企画だと伝えている。長い制作期間を売り文句にする作品ばかりではない。移動の途中に生まれた時間を、録音へ振り向ける。旅の余白が、そのまま作品を置く場所になったという来歴が面白い。

Planet Asia自身の現行Bandcampでも、全曲がMadlibのビートであることを明記している。「Masonic Vocals」は、短い「Double Dutch」と「Carrying Crates」に続き、その後を「Street Clothes」へつなぐ。曲順をたどるだけでも、独立した三分間として聴くのか、六曲の流れの中に置くのかという、二つの入口が見えてくる。

2018年、NTSのTed DrawsによるMadlib特集でも、この曲が選曲表に残っている。発売時の無料配信記事だけで終わらず、後の選曲家が膨大な仕事の中から拾い直した一曲なのだ。大作の代表曲だけをたどると見落とす場所がある。短いEPの三曲目から、その人の仕事へ入っていく道もある。

### ドイツとの接点は、録音場所だけではない

同時代のHHVの記事は、EPにドイツのMC、Retrogottが参加していることも伝える。これはEP単位の情報であり、「Masonic Vocals」への客演を示すものではない。旅の経緯と、作品に集まった人々を分けてたどりたい。

### 2023年のページを、2011年の初出と取り違えない

現行の公式Bandcampには2023年10月10日という日付があるが、曲順と時間は2011年の掲載資料まで遡れる。ジャケットも同じ岩場とレコードの風景を使いながら、現在の版では文字が変わっている。公開年は2011年、原版の視覚資料は当時の掲載画像を参照する。

2011年『Cracks in the Vinyl』の3曲目にあたるボーカル曲です。掲載音源は非公式投稿で、曲名・名義・約3分2秒という長さを当時の曲目と照合しています。現在の公式Bandcampの2023年という掲載日を原曲の初出年にはしていません。原版との音声・波形一致は未検証です。 非公式アップロードです。2026年10月21日に配信メタデータで日本が対象地域に含まれることと埋め込み許可を確認しました。日本国内からの実再生・音声の同一性は未確認です。

## 別の名義をたどると、同じ二人に会う

Planet AsiaとMadlibの接点は、二人の名前が並ぶEPだけから探す必要はない。Stones Throwの『Definition of Ill』はPeanut Butter Wolf名義の作品だが、曲目にはPlanet AsiaとMadlibを迎えたリミックスが載っている。主役の欄だけで検索すると通り過ぎてしまう、客演欄に残るつながりだ。また、このカタログは販売用のデジタル・ファイルがレコードを音源にしていることも明記している。曲が存在することと、どの媒体から作られた版なのかは、別々に読む必要がある。『Cracks in the Vinyl』とは別の作品として寄り道し、同じ顔ぶれが違う名義の下に集まる様子をたどってみたい。

## ツアー名の向こうにいる、Rascoという先輩

録音のきっかけになったCali Agentsのツアー。その相棒Rascoとの関係を、Planet Asiaは2018年の取材で自身が高校に入りたての頃までさかのぼっている。RascoはFresno Stateに通っており、共通の人脈を通じて知り合った。やがてBay Areaへ戻ったRascoは、Planet Asiaを自分の曲に迎えると約束する。本人が広く注目される転機として挙げたのは、Rascoの『Time Waits for No Man』とPeanut Butter Wolfの『My Vinyl Weighs a Ton』への参加だった。三日間の空き時間に生まれたEPにも、その前から続く活動の道がある。ただし、Rascoを「Masonic Vocals」の客演者や制作者に加える話ではない。
