## BETで流れなかった「Push」が、Donutsの顔になるまで

MEDの「Push」は、J Dillaが制作し、声でも参加したデビュー作『Push Comes to Shove』の一曲だ。2005年、その映像を監督したAndrew Guraは、後年の回想で意外な行き止まりを明かしている。作品はBETに受理されたものの、MEDのラジオ放送実績が足りず、BETでは流れなかったという。

ただし、撮影した映像の役目はそこで終わらなかった。GuraはMEDとDillaが楽しむ様子を、音楽が止まったあとにも撮り続けていた。その後、Jeff Jankの求めに応じて静止画を渡し、笑顔のDillaが『Donuts』のジャケットになる。

最初から同じ写真がすべての盤に使われたわけではない。Jankによると、映像から取り出した画像は解像度が低く、当初はCDやデジタル向けに使った。LPにはドーナツ店の絵を採用し、のちに笑顔のジャケットをアナログ盤にも求める声を受け、画像を大きく印刷できるよう再構成した。

この来歴を知っても、「Push」を『Donuts』の付録にしてしまいたくはない。公式カタログへ戻れば、そこにあるのはMED名義のアルバムと、「Can’t Hold On」を裏に配した12インチだ。Dillaの写真へ続く道をたどったあと、今度はMEDのレコードへ戻る。その往復ができることも、この一曲の面白さだ。

## 制作背景

### デビュー作を予告した、2005年のサンプラー

Stones Throwは2005年の初めに、予定していたリリースを紹介するサンプラーを制作したと説明し、その収録曲にMEDの「Push」を挙げている。アルバムに入る前から、レーベルが新しい作品を知らせる役目も担っていた。

### 掲載音源の版と確認範囲

掲載音源は2005年『Push Comes to Shove』の単独アルバム曲です。Radio編集、インスト、「Push / Get Back」をつないだ公式映像とは分けています。配信メタデータの149秒と約2分30秒の表記には丸めの差があり、原盤との波形一致を示すものではありません。 2026年10月21日に配信メタデータで日本が対象地域に含まれることと埋め込み許可を確認しました。日本国内からの実再生・音声の同一性は未確認です。
