## 曲の展開が、追跡劇になる

「All Caps」のMV監督James Reitanoは、曲から追跡や種明かしの場面を考えたと話している。漫画仕立ての物語は、彼が曲の展開をどう受け取ったかを知る手掛かりになる。

配役もDJとMCの関係を表す。DOOMは前に立つ怪物、Madlibは金属ケースの中で働く裏方。声とビートを担う二人を、違う役で描いたという。

実際の制作でも、二人はビートの形を大切にしていた。『Madvillainy』制作時のインタビューで、Madlibは音をパート別に残さず、ビートをそのまま2チャンネルへ録音していたと説明する。DOOMも、その方法なら後からビートの組み立てを変えられず、そこへラップを乗せられると応じている。これはアルバム全体についての話だが、二人の分担を知るうえで面白い。

そこで役立つのが、12インチ『Curls & All Caps』に収められたインスト版だ。まず声なしで展開を追い、それから原曲へ戻って、DOOMの言葉がどこに入るかを聴く。さらに公式MVと比べれば、同じビートにラッパーと映像作家がそれぞれ何を見つけたか、二つの入口から楽しめる。

## 紙に描いた約千枚が動きだす

監督によれば、MVには約900〜1000枚の手描きの絵を使用した。紙の絵をスキャンして合成した映像だ。動きだけでなく、止めた一枚の描写も見てみたい。

## 通常盤にはない、プロモ盤のもう一曲

『Curls & All Caps』のラジオ／DJ向けプロモ盤には、通常盤とは別にMadlibの「Bonus Beat (Radio Promo Exclusive)」が入る。Stones Throwの2010年の記録では製作は約200枚、そのうち40〜50枚のスリーヴにJeff Jankがスプレーで絵を施した。通常盤とプロモ盤は、曲目から区別したい。
