## スクラッチを、自分も参加できる音楽にした。

「Bear Witness」を掘るときは、まず版を分けておきたい。Interscopeの公式曲目では、約3分の「Q-Bert’s Story」と、6分46秒の「Automator’s 2 Turntables and a Razor Blade Re-Edit」が別々に載る。 ここで辿るのは約3分のアルバム版。長尺の再編集とは異なる録音として聴きたい。

Dan the Automatorは原作について、Kool Keithのキャラクターを聞いて音楽を組み立て、Qbertを迎え入れたと語っている。制作場所は両親の家の地下にあったGlue Factory。レコード会社の期待する音に合わせずに進められた自由も、彼が強調する点だ。 Qbertへの評価を語る別のインタビューからも、ターンテーブルを特別な演奏の場として考える姿勢が伝わる。 この曲を入口にすると、Dr. OctagonをMC一人の変名だけで捉えず、声、制作、DJの技術が持ち場を持つ作品として辿れる。

Dan the AutomatorはMadeleine Byrneの取材で、Run-D.M.C.の完成度に圧倒された一方、Malcolm McLarenの作品では何が起こっているかが分かり、自分も親のターンテーブルで試すようになったと話す。「Bear Witness」の個別セッションの説明ではないが、Qbertの演奏を招く制作者自身も、DJとして音楽へ入った人だったという接点が見える。
