## 自分の声を嫌っていたPhifeが、前に出る

「Check the Rhime」の掛け合いを聴く前に、Phife Dawgが自分の声を嫌っていたことを知っておきたい。本人はDazedの取材で、Q-TipとAliがその声を認めてくれても、最初は好きになれなかったと振り返る。『The Low End Theory』を録るころ、ようやく自分の声をつかんだ感覚があったという。

1991年の同作に収められたこの曲は、その変化を聴く入口になる。Phifeは別の取材でも、このアルバムで初めてグループの一員だと実感したと話している。当時JiveにいたBarry Weissも、「Check the Rhime」の発売をPhifeが大きく注目された転機として挙げた。

## ホーンの出どころは、AWB自身が記録している

Average White Bandの公式サイトは、サンプル使用例の一覧で「Love Your Life」のホーンと「Check the Rhime」の関係を明記している。曲全体が一つの原曲からできているという意味ではない。まずこのホーンを手がかりに原曲へ戻ると、ラップの背後にある別の演奏へ聴き進められる。

## ラップ以前から、相手の言葉を続けられた

PhifeはQ-Tipを2歳のころから知り、互いの言いかけた文を続けられる仲だったと回想している。これはこの曲の録音手順を説明した発言ではなく、二人の関係についての証言だ。掛け合いを技巧だけでなく、長いつきあいの延長として捉える手がかりになる。
